General Info
Baraga County was formed in 1875 from Ontonagon and Houghton Counties, and named after missionary Bishop Frederic Baraga. Baraga assisted in the development of the area and L’Anse was selected as the county seat. As the railroad was constructed, settlers arrived to claim homesteads. Mining, logging and agriculture dominated early industry and more communities were established to accommodate workers. As iron ore supplies were exhausted, development slowed and manufacturing and agriculture strengthened the economy. Today Baraga County is home to approximately 8,528 residents.
