General Info
Located in South Central Wisconsin, Rock County is named after a large rock in the Rock River and is one of the oldest counties in the state. Native Americans along with early settlers from New England and Europe shaped the area’s history. In 1835 the first settlement was made and Rock County was officially founded in 1839 with Janesville selected as the county seat. Settlers began to farm and establish manufacturing centers by utilizing the river to power mills. The mills provided paper, flour, beer, fabrics and various products, and enabled Rock County’s economy to become stable and diversified. By 1900 its population had reached 51,203 and the area continued to grow and develop. Today Rock County is home to approximately 160,155 residents.
