Nebraska Game and Parks hosts a variety of programs aimed at recruiting new participants to the sport of fishing. Among other events, these include youth fishing tournaments and Family Fishing events, in which rods, reels and expert instruction are all available to young and new anglers at no cost. Following are programs aimed to attract more anglers to the sport of fishing.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission hosts two ice fishing clinics each January to teach novice ice anglers important safety precautions and basic skills. Two such clinics are planned for 2017:
Jan. 14, 2017 at Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area near Wahoo (west boat ramp) from 1 to 4 p.m.
Jan. 21, 2017 at Yanney Lake in Kearney from 1 to 4 p.m. Prior to the clinic, the Nebraska Fish and Game Association will host a classroom clinic at Yanney Heritage Park’s Environmental Resource Center in Kearney from 8 a.m. to noon. This clinic will feature presentations by some of Nebraska’s top ice fishermen.
Family Fishing is a Nebraska Game and Parks program designed to help you make a family fishing adventure possible and rewarding. Family Fishing Events are held to assist you and your families in learning how to fish with the assistance of NGPC staff and Certified Fishing Instructors. Family Fishing Nights occur across the state at Family Friendly Lakes, where you will find loaner fishing equipment, bait and staff to assist you.
Carp-O-Rama is a one-day version of fish camp, featuring information on how to catch, clean and cook carp. If you are a novice or expert angler, we have advice on fishing equipment and techniques, as well as demonstrations on fish preparation. The lake is pre-baited to attract fish and improve carp-catching opportunities. This Family Fishing event features activities and information suited for a family adventure. Loaner fishing equipment, bait and advice from experts will be provided.
Nebraska hosts a number of fishing tournaments for a variety of fish species every year. Here you’ll find information on high school fishing tournaments and all other tournaments taking place across the state.
