General Info
Gage County was originally inhabited by Oto and Missouri Indians until land was ceded in 1854. The county was organized in 1857 and named in honor of William D. Gage. Mr. Gage was a chaplain of the legislature and assisted with establishing the county seat of Beatrice in 1859. Pioneers arrived to stake land claims and the area began to boom with the development of the railroad. Communities were founded near railroad junctions and early industry was dominated by agriculture. A courthouse was built in 1870 and by 1900 the population of Gage County had reached 30,051. Today Gage County is home to approximately 121,907 residents.
