KANDIYOHI COUNTY

General Info

Once home to Indians, Kandiyohi County was established in 1858 with the city of Kandiyohi as its original county seat. The area was comprised of Kandiyohi and then Monongalia Counties until 1870 when the two counties were merged. Willmar was selected as the new county seat in 1871 due to its central location and the name Kandiyohi, a Dakota word for buffalo fish, was selected for the new territory. Railroad development allowed for growth and industry was dominated by agriculture. Kandiyohi County continued to grow and by 1900 its population reached 18,146. It has since become a popular region for recreational activities due to the many lakes found within its borders. Today Kandiyohi County is home to approximately 41,123 residents.
