The Mexican Wolf Restoration Area includes portions of New Mexico. Wolves are protected by the federal Endangered Species Act and by the New Mexico Wildlife Conservation Act. Federal penalties for shooting a wolf can include a year in jail and a $50,000 fine with additional New Mexico state penalties for violating the Wildlife Conservation Act.

Valles Caldera National Preserve: Special Trout Water4 ; 7-day Vehicle Pass ($20) or an NPS Senior/All America Pass is required. A $40 preserve only annual pass is available. Each angler, regardless of age, is required to obtain a free Valles Caldera National Preserve fishing permit for each day of fishing on the preserve. Fishing permits are available at the Valle Grande Entrance Station and can be obtained upon arrival on the date fishing will take place. Reservations are no longer accepted.
